L40S vs A100 for inference and mixed workloads

The L40S is worth testing for inference and graphics-related workloads; the A100 is worth testing when its memory variant or compute configuration better fits the job. NVIDIA specifies 48 GB on L40S and 40 GB or 80 GB A100 variants. Check fit before comparing hourly prices.

Memory eliminates some choices immediately

A workload that needs more memory than the selected device provides must change its configuration or use a different allocation. The 48 GB L40S sits between common A100 memory variants, so the A100 name alone does not settle the choice.

NVIDIA positions L40S for AI and graphics workloads and A100 for data-center compute. Use those descriptions to form a test plan, not to assume which one is faster for a particular model.

Separate the jobs you need to run

An image pipeline may combine generation with other GPU operations, while a language-model endpoint spends its time on a different execution path. Test each important job and weight the result by its expected share of usage.

If the rental will support both development and production, record those requirements separately. Optimizing a one-off experiment should not make the daily serving workload more expensive.

Do not infer topology from device count

Ask how GPUs are connected inside the rented machine and whether the software will split work across them. Two devices that each fit an independent job are a different proposition from two devices sharing one model.

If the job can be split into independent requests, separate workers may be sufficient. If it needs frequent tensor exchange, test communication overhead before multiplying the device count.

Choose with a workload budget

Use the same precision, model revision, request lengths and acceptance threshold. Compare cost per completed result with any storage and setup overhead included. Record the GPU variant and host configuration in the result.

If the less expensive option already meets the required latency and capacity, spend the remaining budget on redundancy or a larger recovery margin. If it fails the memory requirement, no hourly discount fixes the mismatch.

Questions readers ask

Does L40S have more memory than A100?

It has more than a 40 GB A100 and less than an 80 GB A100. Specify the A100 variant.

Which is better for a small inference service?

Benchmark both at the required context length and concurrency. Memory fit and cost at the latency target should decide.
